Gas Anaesthesia and Surgery Monitoring

Security measures during anaesthesia are essential to prevent accidents.

Be prepared for possibilities   (Pre-sedation)   prevent   (Intravenous catheter, oxygen),   sooner detect   (Monitoring)   and raise quick and effective solutions   (Surveillance and awareness),   are the basis for success in anaesthetic procedure, without having to clarify to the usual "no anaesthesia exceeded" or "had a bad reaction to anaesthesia."

First point:   pre-sedation evaluation. Through this assessment hidden problems can be detected. Many of the complications that are credited to anaesthesia were actually due to prior problems (heart, kidney, etc…) if found previously, could have been treated and stabilized before surgery, or could   have being prevented adjusting the anaesthetic protocol.

Second point:   prevention. According to guidelines of the AVA (Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists) throughout anaesthesia must be administered through a vein (catheter) and an oxygen source available through an endotracheal tube. It is similar to the seat belt and the airbag in a car. In case of accident, both are essential to prevent damage.

Third point:   monitoring. It refers to the constant reading of certain values that help us determine the stability of the patient. At Villablanca Veterinary Hospital we have multiple monitors and multi mono-parametric giving us continuous information like, electrocardiography, temperature, capnography (CO 2 level   exhaled), plethysmography (O2saturation   blood and pulse wave), invasive blood pressure and non-invasive central venous pressure, etc...

Fourth point:   supervision and control.   It concerns not only one or multiple monitors connected, but there are one or more qualified staff members constantly watching them and following the trends to detect abnormalities sooner. Treatment of respiratory arrest, severe hypo-or hypertension, arrhythmias, etc...The faster detection, the easy taken care and obviously more effective.
