TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT

Ophthalmology Equipment

The ophthalmology equipment are the “tools" necessary associated with an ophthalmologist: Direct and Indirect Ophthalmoscope, Slit Biomicroscope, Digital Tonometer…

There are multiple eye diseases in our pets and each one accompanied with various symptoms, often different problems have the same symptoms. If a full diagnoses is not completed this may cause a wrong assessment.

To do this, the ophthalmologist   has in his office a set of basic instruments to make an accurate diagnosis or at least an initial orientation. Like, a direct and indirect Ophthalmoscope, Slit Biomicroscope, digital tonometer and diagnostic eye drops should be in all veterinarian ophthalmologic rooms.

It is vital to do the ophthalmic examination in a dark room if possible quietly, especially with cats. It must be performed with optical media, giving a variable light intensity to be able to magnify images and allow seeing the different structures of the eye very closely and very clearly, from the outermost to the innermost of the eyes.

The patient must be calm and usually we ask the owner to stay because it keeps the patient calm. Sometimes is necessary to do a more complex test that may require sedation because it could last longer periods of time and could be frustrating for the pet, but not painful.

For example, assessment on a cataract patient to know if he/she is a good candidate for surgery, tests are done with electroretinography (ERG) or Ocular Ultrasound requiring sometimes a light sedation. With these tests, we can choose the ideal patient with cataract for surgery and restore his/her sight.

Therefore, the ophthalmology equipment are the "tools" necessary accompanying an ophthalmologist. Without this equipment is almost impossible to make an assessment and diagnosis of a disease in the eyes of our pets.

Just keep in mind that the popular saying is not wrong when he says that "the eyes are the mirror of the soul".

Diseased eyes can sometimes be the only symptom that a systemic disease (from the body) shows. For example, ocular hemorrhage may be the only symptom that appears at the beginning of a disease of blood clotting, a waterfall can be signs of Diabetes Mellitus or inflammation inside the eye (uveitis) may be the initial symptom uterine infection (pyometra). At the same time, we all know that sad eyes, rheumy or dried should worry and the best option will be to check with your specialized veterinarian. The right equipment and expert hands are all that is needed to determine, before an ocular symptom, if there are problems not only in the eyes, if not the rest of the body.

One last tip: Watch out for home remedies to treat your eyes or use on your dogs or cats, the drops that might be good for you or work so well on your neighbours. Rarely are recommended and further improve the problem, it prolongs and loses precious time to heal our beloved pets.

Ask your veterinary ophthalmologist: a simple call saves many eyes.
