The Beauty Salon at Home: Toilet and bathing

The Beauty Salon at Home: Toilet and bathing

Imagine a typical day ... go out with your dog playing endlessly with other dogs, filled with mud and slime of the other dogs also a rainy day and when you get home from humidity, dirt and smell of your dog’s sebaceous glands is difficult to live with it.

These and other similar situations mean:   BATH

But "careful"   bathing and grooming a dog is not easy and it can be catastrophic. If your dog has a bad bathing experience most likely your dog will not want to repeat.

The first option is to take your dog to a professional groomer who has plenty experience with this kind of situations ... but   if you decide to do it,   here are a few tips to make the experience as pleasant as possible for both you and your dog.

  1. Choose the right place. Use your bathtub if you have one, is the most common, but if you have a very small dog, you may find it easier to do in a bowl.
  2. Before you start with the bath, comb and brush, especially if you have a long hair pet. This will remove dead hair and knots, which are more difficult to handle dry than wet. Besides, many dogs love to be brushed (actually for many represents as a gift) and it helps them to relax.
  3. Wear a waterproof apron if possible or old clothes. Sure you might end up soaked and dirty.
  4. Place a non-slip mat in the tub (especially if your dog is big) to prevent slipping, especially to get she/he in and out.
  5. Dogs usually do not like cold water, but be careful you can also burn them with hot water. The water should always be warm. The "dog must go to the water ... not the water to the dog." Do not put the dog in the tub without water and do not open the showerhead to start the bath, therefore, first fill the bathtub. The amount of water depends on the size of your dog, but do not fill the tub too much because you could scare them. The sound of water coming from the tap can also be scary.
  6. Grab your dog and place him/her carefully into the tub filled. Probably, right after contact with the water it might try to jump out of the bath. Try to stay calm but firm and do not let him get away.
  7. Use a container or a plastic cup to throw water over (or use the showerhead, but be aware that many dogs are frightened). Be prepared because it is very likely that once wet it will try to shake the water and wet everything (including you).
  8. Squeeze shampoo in the palm of your hand, dissolve it with a little warm water and dispense it in your dog body. Then begin to massage at least a couple of minutes, making sure it breaches through the hair and reaches the skin. First shampoo to deep clean and rinse, put a second shampoo specially if is very dirt and rinse again. Rinse well with warm water and make sure you completely eliminate any shampoo.
  9. Try to be careful not to get water or shampoo in the eyes and ears. For the ears, one trick is to put some cotton balls moistened with a few drops of olive oil to keep water out of the ear canals. Once the dog is finish with the bath do not forget to take them off!
  10. Get him out of the tub wrapped in towels that you saved specifically for him (careful not to slip and fall, you or your dog) take him to the terrace or patio and let him shake off the excess water. Wrap and dry excess water with a dry towel, if good weather let it dry in the sun. You can also use a hairdryer if your dog is not afraid, but be careful not to burn with the high hot air temperature of the dryer.  Always use the hairdryer about 30 or 40 cm away from the skin.
  11. Give a reward for being good and once dry brush it to make it perfect.
