PREVENTIVE MEDICINE

Legislation

The following vaccines are mandatory by the declaration of zoonotic disease, euthanasia: Rabies Vaccine and Deworming Echinococcus.

Law pass on April 19, 2010 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, establishing the enforcement of treatment of companion animals, the data for identification in the sale and slaughter methods of the same in the communities in Andalucía.

Rabies Vaccination

It is mandatory rabies vaccination for dogs, cats and ferrets. The first vaccination must be done after three months of age and the following should be done thirty days after the first. This vaccination should be repeated annually.

Worming

It is mandatory the worming of dogs, cats and ferrets against echinococcosis. This will be done under veterinarian instructions and referred to in the health card or passport indicating manufacturer, product name and date of treatment.  Worming will be done at least once a year.

Treating Leishmaniasis

For those dogs with positive clinical and laboratory results of leishmania and with the owner’s agreement to keep them alive, there is by law a requirement to run the full course prescribed treatment by the authorized veterinarian and undergo many analytical tests needed.

Health card / European passport

1.     Dogs, cats, ferrets, pigs, mini pig or Vietnamese and psittaciformes must have a health card for each animal, which will be issued and completed by an authorized veterinarian. It is a voluntary tenure in relation to the rest of the pets without prejudgment to paragraph 6 of this article.  The health cards issued in its place of origin will be valid for pets coming from other districts, however, if the stay in Andalucía is longer than three months, owner’s must apply for the models established in this Order.

2. The health card indicates at least all mandatory treatments.

3. The unique model of health card in Andalusia for dogs, cats and ferrets is set out in Annex I. This model follows to the provisions of Commission Decision 2003/803/EC of 26 November 2003 and will be valid for accompanied animals when traveling between different Member States of the European Union.

Violations and penalties

Failure to comply with the obligations under this Law shall be punished in accordance with the provisions of Title V of the Law 11/2003, of 24 November, as serious breaches.
